A few designs a friend of mine made for my video web series The Rise of the Planet of the Snapbacks. I love the colour scheme and the way she has turned the name I developed into a creative brand image which I’m really happy with. The name is a reference of The Rise of the Planet of the Apes which I think reflects what is happening at the moment….the rise of armies of young teenagers wearing snapbacks and buying onto the trend that is called ‘street wear’. It’s an intriguing topic as there is a really interesting side to street wear as there are so many influencing factors involved where in particular I am most looking forward to exploring the skateboarding side of the culture. I’m quite frankly tired of seeing snapbacks being worn everywhere, in every style and colour and the endless amount of people producing an ‘urban’ brand, by simply buying some cheap clothing materials and shoving a logo on it. I think it will be interesting to try to find out why this trend has become so popular and exploited.

I am in the progress of developing my programme idea called Who Am I? intended for BBC Three, exploring teenagers mixed racial and ethnic backgrounds in Britain. Each week the presenter (I wrote the idea with Reggie Yates in mind) will meet a different teenager from the UK who has a mixed racial or ethnic heritage, with little engagement to this part of them, whether a parent left was absent in their life from a young age or there was no encouragement in introducing them to this part of their identity. I think it’s a really important part of a teenager’s sense of who they are and where they belong as often they can feel lost and confused coming from two very different cultures. This is a smaller version of a pilot episode I produced and joint filmed with my excellent production team to give a taste of what the series could look like.

I just finished interviewing the wonderful Akala as part of my final year project which went really well considering it was my first ever interview! We have formed a small television production company called The Telly People and are producing a weekly online student programme for The Student Pocket Guide. This week we also met with Editor-in-chief of Heat magazine Lucie Cave and BINTM winner Letitia Herod at The Clothes Show Live and cooked up a storm making energy balls in our studio.

I’m currently undertaking a lot of research to aid the development of my idea to produce an online video web series which will explore street wear in Britain to underpin and question its recent proliferation. The videos will feature how street wear trends have evolved such as the trainer and head wear sensation, the history of street wear’s ties to skateboarding, different music genres and how the British brands have evolved. Videos will feature the main syndicators in British street wear, the music artists, trainer enthusiasts, clothing designers, bloggers and general people I stumble across on the streets who are all involved.

There are a lot of elements I want to explore however felt that skateboarding has been a fundamental part of the influences and history of street wear. Here’s a road test video from when I met with Bob Sanderson- anyone in Birmingham who knows about skateboarding knows he is the man to talk to- who is a representative of Ideal Skateboard Supply Ltd. I think of Bob as Skip from the Z Boys, he is so interesting to talk to and really guides and supports a lot of the young skaters in and around Birmingham.

Being a member of Birmingham City University’s Tiger TV, I was able to film Tim Westwood’s visit with BBC 1Xtra to the University. Here I spent the day with Tim, documenting the show which was broadcasted live from the University. I Had some problems uploading the video to YouTube as the quality decreased, it plays better when not in full screen and watch in 480p!

People say they love the intelligent story lines, bad boy explosions, twisted relationship between Jesse and Heisenberg and the fresh outlook Breaking Bad has upon crime orientated drama. All those things tick the boxes for me too, but one of my favourite aspects of the programme is the stunning filming and epic time lapses. The first minute of this clip is in my eyes one of the best looking American TV sequences ever made. I haven’t stopped listening to the Latin American beat from this clip, ‘1997’ by French-Chilean hip hop artist Ana Tijoux, which complements the sequence perfectly.

I have been working on Social Media Tutorials a Student Academic Partnership (SAP) called project with two lecturers at my University on turning their research on social media into a proactive website and pool of resources for students. My roles have been helping to develop the website and all the video content for it, where I was camera operator and director for each video displayed on the site. The material here is available for re-use via a Creative Commons Licence under which you are able to copy, distribute and transmit the work for non-commercial use providing you don’t alter the work and that you attribute it to Birmingham School of Media.

Just got back from an amazing weekend at GlobalGathering where I was a member of their film crew. We have produced the official highlights video for the festival which will be released shortly, where I was a videographer and joint editor. Not only was this invaluable in terms of allowing me to do what I love (film 24/7) but I also got to interview some of my favourite artists Redlight, Disclosure, Rudimental, Eats Everything and Maverick Sabre.

This video marks the point where my fascination with Television commercials met my love for Adidas. Still two years after this was made I am still finding new ways the video influences my work and it will never grow old to me. Besides the number of A-Listers and Dee Edwards soundtrack the editing is by far the best part of the commercial, it is AMAZING and it is not often that I complement editing. I love the use of different cameras used to film on and the constant switch between numerous viewpoints works really well. The pace of the video works beautifully- the slow motion editing style makes you feel in the moment of it all.

If only I has some bad boy smoke machines laying around for my projects.

In one minute Adidas has been able to combine skateboarding, break dancing, biking, rollerblading mixed with some of the most popular names in celebrity youth culture all for the promotion for a campaign on street footwear.

It’s basically a massive street party with a load of celebs.
